On a regular day, when you pour yourself a glass of water to drink, it may seem clean and taste fine but that doesn’t mean you can expect it to be safe to drink. Most of the water sources that we reckon as safe may contain dissolved minerals, organic compounds or even live organisms in them and that too at harmful concentrations. Consumption of contaminated water for cooking or any other purpose can be harmful to your health. High concentrations of some specific minerals in water can result in unpleasant taste and odour. It is recommended that you get your water quality checked if you haven’t yet.

There are multiple factors that can affect the quality of your drinking water. But the ones that need to be checked are-

  • Total coliform bacteria present in water: This is a test that indicates if the water has been contaminated with human or animal waste. If the water is found positive for this test then it is not healthy for consumption. Though, it can be made safe to consume if it is disinfected by any means.
  • Nitrate content in water: Drinking water supply that contains high concentration of nitrate can be fatal to humans. This contamination may occur near fertilized fields and farms or water sources close to factories.
  • The pH level of water: It is recommended that pH level of drinking water should be between 6.5 and 8.5. Water with pH below 6.5 can be harmful to your health.
  • Hardness of water: Drinking water with higher concentrations of magnesium and calcium is referred to as “Hard”. Although hard water is not affect health much but it is advised that drinking water should test below 150 mg/l hardness.

Above mentioned are few factors that you must get checked. There are a lot more tests that can be done but analysing them can often be expensive and avoidable.
